ORTABAHÇE

Wind…

Wind is not only a climate element for Ortabahçe. It is an element of design in addition to user and the identifier of the positive space. Is moving with the wind or anchored the wind movement is monitored. Now the wind out of the door you enslave yourself. Moves with the trees, sees behind trees, with the wind will move quickly to fill the entire space of the window and door openings. Wind provides compliance with all the colors together. All the sounds and his own voice mixes and keeps the rhythm. Even if eyes closed, wind recipes the space. Wind Eliminates the boundaries between interior and exterior, horizontal and vertical perception moves. It recipes full-empty relationship, walls, doors and windows keeps a rhythm.

A piece of the sky is filled Ortabahçe. So there will be air movement from center of the courtyard to facades which are opened with windows and doors. Movement of the air is controlled and directed by trees. Trees become both the channel and obstacle at the same time. Branches of trees join the dance of the wind. Everything on ground, leaf, dust, bugs start to dance with them. Wind turns to sky when sky is missed. Wind goes through windows when it decided to join human being. Wind fills the courtyard with its whispers. Wild becomes a dear friend in sunny days. Edges become softer with wind. All movements of wind are for creating balance and rhythm of pieces.

Wind in the court… Sun, earth, water become together with wind with their smells.

I firstly look at Ortabahçe is a huge space and it is
the center of Taşkışla. Everything and everybody gathered here.
Besides, the garden is starting and finishing point in the entire space. All pass through this at least once a day.
When I observed every corner of the space, I
notice new details. I think some words about transparency and I re-examine this
garden. Ortabahçe
whose opposite sides are symmetric has a shape of rectangle. Four sides belonging
doors are reciprocal and provide transition to inside of building. Ortabahçe is
located in the center of Taşkışla in terms of geometry and there are classes around the facades facing
the garden inside space, so classes inside are
perceived simultaneous of different spatial locations. Windows on the whole
sides are implied literal and phonemal transparency. That windows have glasses
are literal transparency because of material characteristics. On the another
hand, all the eye perceives is phonemal transparency. Vivid colours and repeating basic geometry above the sides provides
tranparance. Thus, garden is brightness thanks to these factors. Walls and
sequence windows system are seems to one fullness of wall and the another one
emptiness of window, that is continuing surrounding the garden. This regular
array reveals a perceptible rhythm easily. It is a part of a continuous
movement ;in addition, this rhythm
continues two straight horizontal lines. While I look at a point the gardens
borders, duty cycle on the borders give a sense of depth seeming like a picture.
While depth is giving us a sense of infinite, the intersection of the wall shows us the end pointh of infinity.
While
I look at the ground to the sky, I see some modulations of layers. The
overlapping layers on the sky in terms of colour such as blue green brown.
Otherwise, I see some trees which were planted at random. Leaves and branches
of these trees not only create a superposed image but also show distinct line
of the layers. Moreover, position of these different layers also give us a
sense of depth. Whole elements of belongs to the Ortabahçe possess different
transparency concepts.

The Colours of the Courtyard
Somewhere dirty, somewhere clean elevations, in the shades of maroon, the colour differences, just like spilled dies from above. There are no ascents or descents, like everything’s in the same line, like its saying everything’s equal. All the elevations are full of windows in certain ranges, like rejecting the hierarchy. Vaultings on the windows make bents, but there’s linearity in overall. There are inviting gates on all four sides. It’ll show off itself through the rows of windows, does coquetry, makes you impatient, and finally, when you reach the gate, you’ll feel you went into the atmosphere. Everything summons you to the centre. Maybe, the centre made by the central pool. You’ll smell of history on the headings of the columns, pieces of architrave, and the lion sculptures but most of the time you’ll use them to put your hands and feet without caring. Everything works for its function unconsciously. The winter gets so cold that ice covers the pool; you want to walk on it. Green turns into white, then, some time, white turns into green, green turns into red… But there’s a brown stays still, no matter what the leave’s colours, boles of the trees, preserves their colour. Sometimes fallen leaves cover the surface of the pool. Sometimes multi-coloured balloons which made in designing course cover the surface of the pool. Glitters of the sunshine falls on to the blue. The blue turns into a mirror and reflects the reality with all its clarity. Four-sided obscurity forms limits, but on the other hand, opening to the sky offers eternal freedom, which alternating grey to blue. Greys are, banisters, which used for sitting on it, stairs, which hosts the smokers, stones covers the floor, and by two or three window gaps, pipes. They all form a border, a plane, a line, and a texture. Cats, students, teachers, they all joins the texture, colour, harmony, and be as one.

Extensions in Courtyard - Cansu SEZER

EXTENSIONS IN COURTYARD

After feeling the smooth floor with the smell of the stones, a soft ground with some light which blows me to the lightness of emotions has welcomed me.  The path between the grass led me to my usual chair so as to sit and observe at the middle of the ground, now I’ve just become a part of it.

Everything might be seen around is made of horizontal lines and the ground is formed by the greatest one. Every detail of dynamism is the extensions of the horizontality. The level of the trees’ root and the bottom of the circular pond as the down horizontality, the level of the benches and the lion sculpture as the middle horizontality, the branches and the blossoms as the up horizontality all merged so as to create the dynamism. Every movements, stable or in action, in the courtyard have become a part of extension. Thus, it may be seen the unity which is created by the lack of certain borders. The relation among the pieces with the other ones is like the transparency between the edges of the branches and the sky.

Solidity defined by the light, which comes in an order and creates rhythm, with the transparency of the branches is towards to me. The order of the lights in this specific integrated field shows that this solidity is multifunctional. Multifunctionality is divided by two as opaqueness and transparency accordingly. The ratio between this opaqueness and transparency contributes to notice the sustaining and remarkability.

How many people do pass through this ground in a day? While sitting on my usual chair, I realized the traces people left behind for the first time. Some of them are clearer than the ones which have become indistinct in time. Among the transparent points of the solidity and the extensions of the horizontality, I can see the basing points of dense areas which are made of the movements of people. These basing points are renew every second depends on the people’s minds. Some people choose to walk through the path. The path which was made in order to guide people to the courtyard was already determined and fictionalised. Some people choose to walk through the grass. Grass which was made in order to strenghten the spirit of the courtyard means someone escaping from the routine.

Just before leaving my usual chair, the light passed above the solid obstacles, glared through the branches for a second and made some sliding patterns on me. I turned my head up and saw the source of light that is reflected from the pink walls. Afterall, I stood up and walked through the glass by leaving my traces behind me in the courtyard of Taşkışla.

This   story  is  about  fullness  and  gap. Story  are  about  effects  of  fullness  and  gap. What  does affect  fullness? The  main  factor  is  people, people also known as the social entity;  changing  factor  of fullness  is  also  people, people also known as the moving entity. Why  do  people  want  to  go  out?The first that comes to mind is smoking and then after that of course  talking and  resting .  Without  sun…  One  of  them  still  survives. Only  smoking  survives. There is always user of courtyard not only people which smoke cigatettes but also cats even in winter.Maybe  the  sun   collects  the  people  around  green  grass for  lying down  but  courtyard is different in winter. Actually  it  is more transparent since there are not green leaves anymore. Trees  are  not  magnificent  without  their  leaves   but  you  can  see  the  whole  sky  nearly. You  can see  the  birds  exactly. Whitout   sun, courtyard  loss eneghy  like   absorbed  soul. Unfortunately  a  few  people  share  same   air  and  same  times but they share.  A  few  people   talk  with  each  other  on  the  concrete  floor. The people  share  maximum  five  minutes  on  the  cold  concrete  floor. Maybe air is cold but Taskisla walls which dyed pink  heat  your  inside.
With  autumn,  with  rain  you  can see  drops  which  fall  from  huge  sky  to  small black  pool  or  green  grass.  You  can  feel  water  on  your  body  and  your  eyes. When you look at the black pool ,you are  seeing sky on water now.Water and sky is nested ;nevertheless a  few   people experience same moment.
With  summer , with  sun. Fullness   starts   with  sun. People   do  not   want   to  loss  their  time  indoor. When you  turn your head up high, you  can  see green  leaves instead of  blue rectangle sky. When you look at the across ,you realize throng. You  can  not  see Taskisla  walls no more, you  can  see the  crowd   in  front  of  the  walls .Walls  echoies  with sound . Speech  sounds  rise  from  small  people  group  with  shouts  of  laughter.Very huge laugter.

The balance of open, semi open and closed spaces throughout a structure defines more or less the experiences that it can offer. Yet the transitions between these spaces gain more importance in increasing the intensity of those experiences. These transition elements in the Taskisla courtyard are mostly created by unintentional and organic formations.
As you enter the courtyard passing through the narrow doors of Taskisla you immediately sense a completely different environment surrounding you. The repeating patterns of the white corridor now open up to something that you would not expect. The monotonous feeling is torn up by the drastic change in our perception of space.  The cubical space with the top surface open to air has an organic texture formed by layers of primary and secondary spaces. The main layer is formed by the contours of the cube and the second by the stairs leading to the lower level.  The fact that the shape of the courtyard is so definite, different readings of space is hard to make. Yet the experience when you stand in the middle of the courtyard is more intense then you assume. The organic components add up in creating captivating instances.
The rays reflected by the windows of the inner façade create a third layer of transparency. It is not due to the transparent quality of glass but more because of its reflective qualities as a material. These reflections change during daytime creating different combinations throughout the 24 hours. A pattern that repeats in a never-ending cycle... The trees of courtyard are trimmed regularly yet they form engaging shapes. One tree on the corner, bend in such a way that it makes you want to sit beneath it and when you do and look up to the sky it acts as a surface. You feel like you are sitting under a protective hood. The leaves look like they are woven so closely that you start to feel as if they were the background and the rays passing through the voids in between are the objects in front.  When you pay more attention new layers emerge by the leaves condensing in one place and appearing less dense in another. When you stand up from the corner and stand near the pool the glares from the water catch your eye. First it seems like a homogeneous mixture of dirt and water but when you look closely top layers of the water appears clearer. The dirt inside the pool gets thicker as the depth increases and the top layer both reflect and transmit light. The crowd mostly hangs around the pool and this is mostly due to the sensation it creates by reflecting light.

If we consider a day as it is a year, times spent in here are the vacation times. If we consider Taşkışla as our home, the courtyard is the living room, where there’s no responsibility for the time spent there. It’s the place where people break free of the pressure. It’s unique tranquility takes its form from that feeling of relaxation. As I look down at its floor, i can see that it is a place where some people just use for a dirty habit, but for me it’s a different story.

Three different layers create the uniqueness of Ortabahçe, the constants, the trees and the variables, which are the living beings inside it. It is a space outside the roofs of the building, but it is actually in it. There are no borders between the inner and the outer space, it doesn’t matter whether you are under the roof or under the sky, you are in Taşkışla. The windows which create the transparency makes Taşkışla and the courtyard a whole, makes each other reachable with the eyes. Even if the eyes reach the sky, the historical building gets its place in the eyesight, makes me think about it, wonder about the times when it was used for a different purpose. The color of the pool creates a dark reflection, absorbing every color, making a more depressed view of the sky and the building. Now it’s easier to think about past times.

With the comfort of being in the center of a place I consider a home, every state of mind can be reached in here, from the deepest talks to meaningless laughters. After a productive day in the studio, and after being given loads of work for the next studio lesson, a coffee or a nice talk with friends can take the stress away easily, and when this two meets at the courtyard, it forms a matchless relief.

The hour grows late and people slowly left, the courtyard became quiet. Now it is easier to hear the swishing of the leaves, and every little wave I create in the pool. As I take a sip from my coffee and feel the bracing chill from a breeze, I feel comfy like I’m in my home.

the courtyard of taşkışla

The place where I watch the courtyard is related to how i see the courtyard .Am I inside or am I out? This changes my experiences and my observations. When i see through the window i can see all people in the courtyard. I analyze people's movements and directions of their movements. Some people tend to benches in order to rest and some people tend to doors to exit from school. I can see that leaves of trees are waving, branches crashing each other or leaves are falling. But when  I am situated in garden I can feel the wind, I can hear sound of moving branches and I can see that leaves are waving ,and I predict where  leaves drop. When I am in courtyard, although I don’t see all people, I can see detail of bodies, like their facial expressions. Their behaviors give traces about their moods. Someone can be in a hurry, or someone can talk their friends cheerfully. And i notice behavior of other living creatures, like cats or birds .When i look through the window I see shadows. And these shadows are just dark and black stains. But when I am in courtyard I realize these are not just dark stains, shadows are alive as well as owner of them. Shadows make imitation of moving objects .And also there are impressions of light and reflections in the pool, which located in the center of garden. The pool seems just blue area. But when I get close I see my own reflection, then I look center of the pool I see also reflection of Taşkışla. Then again, I look the courtyard from my window, the garden and Taşkışla appear in the same image. Movements in the garden and displays in the building are overlapping. Events in the space and in the building occur in the same time and Emptiness help to sense different events simultaneously. And also seasons have different effects on the courtyard. In winter, people don’t prefer to stand in the garden, but when the weather warm up garden begins to become crowded and activities increase with the spring festival. In the rainy days, people who smoke looking for fringe to protect rain and they group together front of doors. This area is very precious for Taşkışla, because we need this garden for breathing.

a fiction about courtyard of taskisla

Four walls. Four pink walls, fresh air, trees and day light. These are the things which is felt and seen firstly when you go to courtyard of Taşkışla. There are people, all performing different behaviors. Laughings and talkings resound; however, the echoes are getting lost in sound of water. The courtyard gets crowded continuously. I think here is center of attraction of building. The building should be grown from here. The walls have a glamorous color. All of them are the same of each other. All of them are symmetrical. There are trees with a chaotic order in this symmetry. However, as if they are in alignment. I am at the north side of the courtyard, walking. As if branches of trees are relocating with my steps. Look! The fourth wall does not exist. I am running to there in order to escape here. People are fleing in confusion. I am bumping. They flummox my eyes. Trees have curtained the wall for a while. I think there is no exit. My head is bleeding. Water. I am walking. I should wash my face. I am crouching to pool. I see luminous sky above me. The only thing which i can see from beyond the walls is reflecting to the water. My view is the same when i look up and when i look down just like when i look ahead and when i look behind. The chaotic trees in this symmetry confuses my mind. People are getting in. I see from windows. There are walking people at each floor. I am tracking them with my eyes. I feel dizzy. Here, there, over there. He has just been there shortly before. So who is behind me when i saw beyond of glass? They are guffawing me. They are watching me from all windows; moreover, they are laughing me. There are staring people at upper floors. I am getting angry. I am throwing stone which i find from ground. Glass is broking. Just opposite the glass is broking too. Have i thrown only one stone? I feel sick. Sounds of bird. The sky is darkening. No longer i can not see it because of birds. The sounds  are jaring my ear. As if Seagulls and crows are in a kind of play. Instead of going away they are remaining. New birds are coming when they hear sounds of others. I wonder have they supposed here as a coast?  There is not sea here, there is only a handful water. Number of them is increasing gradually. A crow with a bread in its beak. Just behind of it there are a seagull and a crow and they are chasing it. I am watching them. They are turning, turning. Arches of windows are rising and descending consecutively. As a wave. I am in a boat? They are disappearing in branches and they are appearing again. I am feeling dizzy more and more. Wham! It leaves the bread to the floor. Numbers of them is increasing. I can not see the sky anymore. I am running to the pool. I am squating down and again birds. I am suffocating. I am screaming. A voice on my opposite is also screaming. Someone should be imitating me. I am fainting…

SOME OF THEM ARE GONE,SOME OF THEM ARE STAYED.IN THE BEGINNING,IT WAS HARD TO ADDICT.I WAS YOUNG AND I COULD NOT GUESS.I DO NOT REMEMBER MY HOME,WHERE I CAME FROM.I WAS FREE,HAVE BEEN TRAVELLED DİFFERENT PLACES,SEEN MANY PEOPLE.I WAS PLEASURE UNTIL I CAME HERE.HERE IS MACİGFUL.YOU LOSE YOURSELF FACING ITS GORGEOUS HISTORICAL IMAGE AND PLAN.IF YOU DO NOT KNOW VERY WELL,WITHOUT CHASE YOU GO UPSTAIRS/DOWNSTAIRS AND EVERY BIG STAIRS-THAT YOU SEE CONFUSED SO YOU STROLL IN THE CORRIDOR.HOW CAN I KNOW?I WATCH ‘THE SHOW’ FROM WINDOW.THEY ARE IN EVERYWHERE,SWATHE THE BUILDING SUCH THAT I FORGET YHE WALLS AND THINK EVERYWHERE IS GLASS,TRANPARENT.YOU SUPPOSE TO HEAR OR SEE SOMETHING LIKE THAT FAMILIAR BUT IT IS VAIN.EVERYWHERE IS THE SAME,EVERYBODY IS IN EVERYWHERE.I HAVE BEEN IN HERE FOR YEARS BUT I SUSPECT MYSELF.IN A HURRY,MY EYES START TO SEARCH THE POOL BECAUSE OF IT IS STABLE.MAYBE POWER OF WATER MAKES ME I DO NOT KNOW WHEN I SAW IT,I WAS RELAXED.THE POOL IS ALWAYS IN THE SAME PLACE;HOWEVER,ITS SURFACE CHANGES.WHATEVER HAPPENED IN THE YARD,YOU WILL SEE FROM IT BUT YOU MUST BE CAREFUL CAUSE IT ADDS OWN PERSPECTIVE.YOU ARE NOT SURE THAT YOU SAW REAL OR NOT.OTHER STABLE THINGS ARE TREES.THEIR STATE IS COMPLEX.THEY ROOT THROUGH YARD AND ITS PAST,ON THE OTHER HAND THEY RISE TO SKY AS IF TO GET RID OF OR BECOME FREE.THUS,THEIR BRANCHES START TO COVER.YOU COULD NOT FOLLOW THEM.THEY ALWAYS START AND END.DUE TO THE CAOTIC SITUATION,YOU DO NOT SEE THEIR TRANSITION.IF I LOOK THEM A LOT,I LOSE MYSELF AGAIN AND QUICKLY I LOOK FOR THE POOL.I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THE STUDENTS THINK ABOUT IT BUT IT IS MY COMPASS.THEY ARE DIFFERENT,ALWAYS CHANGE.IT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THEM,I HAVE NEVER BE BORED.I BELIEVE THEY ARE REAL OWNERS AND OWING TO THEM HERE BECOMES PLACE,THEIR PLACE,FINALLY MY PLACE.
MELİKE TUNC

Lying down on the grass, watching the people around you, touching a cat, the cat scratching you and causing you to scream in the middle of the garden, listening to the echo you caused, then lying again, smelling the grass, listening to the birds, letting the sun warm up your face, then suddenly escaping from the unexpected rain are some ways to experience a peaceful space in the middle of Taşkışla: The courtyard.

This place is a sanctuary. The sanctuaries are generally closed places in which no one can see you. This is not the case. In here, besides seeing everyone, you can listen to people talking, laughing, smell their perfumes, watch them smoking, or ask them for a lighter... In here, standing alone, you have some privacy on your own, but somehow you are never lonely. In this space there is a transposition of different lives and ideas, you can find common aspects with people. You are truly able to experience the life going on in Taşkışla: you can hear some gossips, you can hear about peoples’ projects or life, you can hear some music… The building itself can be a heaven and a hell at the same time. You may suffer pain or feel very happy in the building due to various reasons, a lover, a project, etc. However the garden never lets this duality. The garden is always peaceful.

The reason for it being so peaceful is its nature itself: This central piece of serenity has a planar form, unlike the long horizontal axes in the building itself. The enthusiastic pink of the façade, the blue of the sky, the green of the grass, the colorful flowers and the many other colorful clothes of the people are in a harmony. This harmony make you feel that you belong to this little secret courtyard. Besides the green areas, the middle gray area is the mixture of all colors and feelings in this sanctuary. It is a background for all the colors, enabling all the colors to show themselves without a chaos. In the middle, there is a pool reflecting all the objects but not the color, as if it is giving a reference to the history. Around the pool, there are some column bases to remind us the history, and a lion protecting the historical values of the building. Therefore nobody is allowed to do anything disrespectful to the historical values of the building. We are able to imagine how the building was used in older times, respect the old users and imagine how their lives were in this building was. If the history is honored well, sometimes the lion pours water to the pool sending its greetings to us.

This vertical space enables to take a deep breath and feel how much I belong to this building. While standing there, rubbing a cat, relaxing, I experience this little space as a piece of heaven , with all its colors, people, and history. Then usually I grab a cup of tea to cherish my happiness.

The courtyard of Taşkışla has huge responsibilities as a vertical space in one of the densest places. This surrounded area means a lot to people who experience the Taşkışla. The walls are the borders of courtyard but it is difficult to accept that the built environment shaped the open area. It seems like the courtyard determine the form of the building in the center of the all axis. It is the connection between the corridors on different levels. The courtyard fulfills a lot of requirements of this alive space. It breaths as lungs, it transmits the voices and visuality of outer space as ears an eyes.

The people of Taşkışla came into the building and went out in the building. Everyone in Taşkışla contribute the soul of the courtyard. The voices, the breaths, the smokes, vibrations of the steps, pulses, blinks and the other stuff…

Now, I am in the courtyard. It has rained, it has already rained the trees on the marble steps. I am going to the center. I know this silvery temple closely. I see a dynamic elliptic floor down on me and up of me same surface but more globally. Everything which comes across with this elliptic mirror becomes double. Two of us stared at the double lion while his relatives are wrapped around. The all trees and plants know their own places. The dark brown almost black columns are broken into pieces. The fragments of the sky can be seen from the fractures. The crows cut through the sky and they landed on the ground. They have flown away from the movement.

The colors of courtyard are very pastel under rainy weather. The little bright red bugs are not visible under the tree barks anymore. While I was thinking the yellow of cats is hidden and the colors are missing, I saw a little strange creature. An uncolored birdy except shiny yellow breast reminds me the beauty of whole courtyard and I released that is not only a unit of the building, it is the vertical section of life.

The life exist s on the surface of the courtyard underneath of it and upper sky, and the subjects on the ground can feel all layers. Changing, alive and temporary existence is the main feature of it.

Transparency_writing

Emptiness is defined by the plenitude. A space is defined by the borders around it, whether physically, three dimensionally existent or not. While a designated space like a courtyard is determined by the walls around it as borders, there are less physically determined spaces when the borders are less definite.  It is those less absolute borders that flourish our perception, creating a passage from one space to another, hence creating transparency permitting us to see and feel more occurrences at the same time.

When ı step into the school's courtyard ı feel that the four walls surrounding the space are the most dominant borders defining a space, the space that ı am surrounded by. When ı search for more, ı am encountered with the most common 'passage elements',  windows, leading me to discover a second space- the interior. I am now able to see, understand the shape and the function of the classrooms, ı can even sense the corridor behind them through the second raw of windows if they are lit.
Besides windows there are stairs as passage elements permitting me to sense the existence of another space, the basement floor, even if ı am not able to see it myself from the point that ı am standing at.

These transparent elements like windows are permeable thanks to their physical material qualities and let me see what is beyond in the direction ı am looking. Then, there are reflections allowing me to sense spaces from different directions. As it has been raining, on the floor ı can see the sky and the branches of the trees alongside with the marble texture. When I go on near the pool, first the pink walls of the building are visible on it ,then the trunk of the trees and finally the branches in front of the gray sky. When ı focus on a leave on the black pool water, the school, the tree and the sky become blurry, it is as if they are all a moving background for the leave now.

Next ı turn my head up high, now ı am looking at the sky, obstructed partly by the branches of the huge, old tree laying over the garden. It ıs quite a monochromatic view with a high contrast, with the gray sky covered with clouds and black branches as the sun is about to set.  Thereafter ı put my glasses on wondering if it would make any difference on my perception. It is different. All the lines are clearer now ı am able to see every little branch in detail. The contour of the branches are sharper. I'm putting my glasses on and off to experience the difference, ı realize that when the contour's are clearer, the limits between the layers are more obvious. The branches closer to me, the ones in the middle, the ones at the end and finally the sky constitute distinguishably different layers; also the sense of depth is more powerful while the absence of sharp contours makes the view more planar and uniform. Still ı am not sure which state ı would say is more tranparent; one allowing the distinguish between the layers simultaneously while creating depth or the one giving a sense of uniformity. I suppose in nature the elements form a perfect combination exposing  different sub-layers, still feeling as a whole containing balanced passages achieving transparency.
